Start with the silhouette, then evaluate weight, drape and surface—not the fibre ratio in isolation.

First, clarify what T/R means

T/R is the industry shorthand commonly used in Asia for a polyester–viscose (rayon) blend. In European and North American sourcing conversations, polyester–viscose is the more familiar description. Viscose is the most common rayon type used in these woven fabrics.

The blend is widely used for tailored womenswear because polyester can add durability, shape retention and crease resistance, while viscose contributes softness, fluidity and moisture absorbency. The final result, however, depends on much more than the fibre percentages.

Start with the silhouette

A fabric should be selected for the garment it needs to create. A sharp blazer needs enough body to hold the shoulder and front edge. Wide-leg trousers need weight and fluid drape without excessive cling. A tailored dress may need a balance of structure, comfort and recovery.

Share the intended garment, season and fit before discussing composition. A supplier can then narrow the options by weight, construction and finish instead of sending several fabrics that meet the fibre brief but behave very differently.

Evaluate weight together with construction

GSM is useful, but it does not describe a fabric by itself. Two qualities at the same weight can feel completely different because of yarn count, weave density, twist and finishing.

Lighter T/R fabrics can work for dresses, relaxed trousers and trans-seasonal separates. Midweight constructions are commonly used for blazers, trousers and skirts. Heavier qualities can support structured tailoring, but the right range depends on design, climate, lining and desired drape.

Ask for both GSM and a physical swatch. Handle the fabric in a larger piece whenever possible, because a small cutting does not fully show drape or movement.

Check drape, recovery and comfort

Drape determines whether the garment falls close to the body, moves fluidly or holds a defined shape. Recovery describes how well the fabric returns after bending, stretching or sitting. Both are essential in women’s tailoring, especially for trousers and fitted jackets.

Viscose content often improves softness and movement, while polyester supports resilience and easier care. More viscose does not automatically mean a better fabric; the optimum blend is the one that delivers the required appearance and performance.

If the garment is close-fitting or intended for travel and all-day wear, consider a controlled amount of elastane. Test recovery as well as stretch percentage—a fabric that stretches easily but bags at the knee or seat will not perform well in the finished garment.

Choose the surface deliberately

T/R fabric can be smooth, twill-faced, brushed, textured, yarn-dyed or piece-dyed. Surface character changes how formal or relaxed the garment feels and how the colour reads.

A compact, clean surface supports polished tailoring. Fine twills and subtle structures add depth without making coordination difficult. Brushed finishes feel softer and more seasonal, but should be checked for pilling, shading and care performance.

For dark solid shades, inspect the fabric for unwanted shine and pressure marking. For checks and stripes, confirm the repeat, usable width and extra consumption needed for matching.

Test what matters to the end use

A specification should reflect the garment rather than rely on a generic test list. Tailored trousers may prioritise seam strength, pilling, abrasion, stretch recovery and dimensional stability. Jackets may also require fusibility trials, pressing checks and appearance after dry cleaning or washing.

If the fabric will be sold in regulated markets, confirm restricted-substance and labelling requirements early. Testing a representative production sample before bulk approval is more useful than discovering a performance issue after cutting.

A practical sourcing brief

A concise brief helps the mill recommend the right construction and reduces random sampling. Include the information below with a reference garment, fabric cutting or clear visual direction whenever possible.

  • Garment type, silhouette, season and target customer.
  • Preferred weight range, drape and level of structure.
  • Required stretch direction, stretch percentage and recovery expectation.
  • Surface, colour or pattern direction, including target shade and repeat limits.
  • Care method, key performance tests and destination market.
  • Target price, expected order quantity, colour count and required delivery date.
