WORKED EXAMPLE

From GSM to roll weight and yield.

For a 180 GSM fabric with a 150 cm finished width and a 100 m roll, the calculator first converts width into metres, then derives the weight carried by each metre of fabric.

Example result

  • Fabric weight180 GSM = approximately 5.31 oz/yd²
  • Weight per metre180 × 1.50 = 270 g/m
  • 100 m roll270 × 100 ÷ 1,000 = 27 kg
  • Fabric yield1,000 ÷ 270 = 3.70 m/kg

Useful conversion formulas

  • oz/yd²GSM ÷ 33.9057
  • g/mGSM × finished width in metres
  • Roll weightg/m × roll length ÷ 1,000
  • Metres per kg1,000 ÷ g/m

GSM is not the same as g/m

GSM is weight per square metre. Grams per metre is the weight of one running metre at a stated finished width, so a wider fabric has a higher g/m even when the GSM is unchanged.

Net fabric weight vs gross roll weight

The estimate covers the fabric only. A measured shipping roll may also include the tube, wrapping and moisture variation, while production width and GSM remain subject to tolerance.

PRACTICAL NOTES

Specification is only the starting point

Why can actual roll weight differ?

Moisture regain, finished width variation, core and packaging weight, and production tolerance can all change the measured roll weight.

Can this calculate garment consumption?

No. Garment consumption also requires marker area, usable width, pattern repeat, cutting direction and allowance.
